House Democrats call for nationalization of refineries
Capitol Hill

House Democrats responded to President's Bush's call for Congress to lift the moratorium on offshore drilling. This was at an on-camera press conference fed back live.
Among other things, the Democrats called for the government to own refineries so it could better control the flow of the oil supply.

They also reasserted that the reason the Appropriations Committee markup (where the vote on the amendment to lift the ban) was cancelled so they could focus on preparing the supplemental Iraq spending bill for tomorrow.
At an off-camera briefing, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said the same. And a senior Republican House Appropriations Committee aide adds that "there were multiple reasons for the postponement" including discussion on the supplemental. But the aide said there was the thought that Democrats may wish to avoid a debate today on energy amendments.

Here are the highlights from briefing
Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), member of the House Appropriations Committee and one of the most-ardent opponents of off-shore drilling

We (the government) should own the refineries. Then we can control how much gets out into the market.
Hinchey on why they postponed the Appropriations markup

I think there aren't enough votes for the Peterson amendment. It wasn't taken up (the Interior spending bill) because of the omnibus Appropriations bill. That's the main focus of the Appropriations Committee.
Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL)

They (Republicans) have a one-trick pony approach.
Rep. Nick Rahall (D-WV), Chairman of the Resources Committee

You cannot drill your way out of this.
Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA), chairman of the House Select Committee on Global Warming

The White House has become a ventriloquist for the oil and gas energy. The finger should be directed back at them. They had plenty of opportunity to (arrange an energy policy). But they did not put an energy policy in place.
Markey

The governors of California and the governors of Florida are going to scream this is not the way to go.
Hinchey

There are a lot of arrows in the President's quiver that he decided not use.
Hinchey

What we do has to be in the interest of the American people. Not major corporations.
Emanuel

It's like when I talk to my kids. Before we're going to talk about dessert, we've got to talk about what's on your plate. I hope I'm a little more successful with the oil industry than I am with my kids.
Markey

There are so many red herrings out there they might as well construct an aquarium.
From House Majoirity Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) when I asked him if the markup was cancelled because of potential Democratic defections on the Peterson amendment..
"No. The reason the markups aren't going through is because we're trying to get the supplemental on the floor tomorrow."
And from a Senior Republican House Appropriations Aide..
"There were multiple reasons for the postponement including ongoing negotiations on the (supplemental) and a (Democratic) wish to avoid debate and votes on the energy amendments."

This is an election year. They planned on nothing getting done,
They didn’t plan on all us of little stupid people to complain so much. Everywhere they turn; complain, complain, complain. All we do is complain. We are not supposed to complain about our government like this.  We are supposed to be good little commu…….Americans. Follow the leader.
How dare we question them why they haven’t done anything since they took majority control? How dare we ask them why they think that high-energy costs are so good for this country? How dare we point out that they have done everything they could to make sure we can’t drill for oil in this country. How dare we say @*&k global warming, start drilling.
They have to get the Queen Bee to go see Algore and Gyorgy for further instructions.

Their object is to socialist the US..make us the new United Socialist States of America.  This is not their first step.  They've already infiltrated academia, media and law.  This is probably a trial balloon to see how many of the citizens of the U.S. would actually baulk at socialism.  I can guarantee you that many, many people won't.  Eyes wide shut.

You known and I known. Unfortunately your are correct.  I was poking around on some other bloggs and found that most people are saying DRILL but they don’t seam to have a clue about the big picture. Half of them believe the garbage about big oil and the other half are split between OPEC or Speculators causing the problem and something should be done to ‘make them stop raising prices’.  A few mentioned that they don’t think that congress is competent and should all be fired. Some blame Bush for not using his executive powers and force it.
Wow, it is going to be an uphill battle.
I suspect that as soon as we start drilling and there is not an immediate and a drastic price drop people may then start to really question what is going on. It will all depend on how the DNC positions them selves on the subject with Obama. That is what all of this “We can’t drill our way of this” chanting is about. It’s the fallback plan.  “See, I told you so. Now would you start trusting us on this, we know best.”  I can hear them now. I would not put it past them to have some new technology already in the works that they can bring in to save the day. Algore is rumored to have invested heavily in some type of new solar collector system.  [Wish I could remember where I heard that or read it. Rumor’s usually have some basis of fact in]

Well, there is a reason for this last one.  There are apparently TWO bans (moratoria) on Offshore Drilling; One is Congressional, the other is in the form of an Executive Order.

Bush can overturn the EO whenever he wants.  Instead, he has challenged Congress to lift their ban.  Then, and only then, will the President overturn the Executive Order.

It makes no sense.  There's no reason not to eliminate the Executive Order immediately.  He's playing some sort of political game with this.

To me, this is the scariest thing.  And it's too late to correct.  So many people have been so thoroughly indoctrinated by public education, and further brainwashed by the media, that they cannot even IDENTIFY Communism when it is presented openly and straightforwardly to them.

The majority of American people are so misinformed and brain-addled that they no longer recognize Communism as a BAD thing.  Most Americans are either unaware of what Communism IS, or they've been so propogandized that they would accept it as a GOOD thing.

This is a semi-rhetorical question, but: How did things go so wrong, so fast?

How did things go so wrong so fast?

Many, many reason I suspect, but for now the the more important question is can be done.

I don’t know how to get the American people to sit up and take notice. The gas price going up, in a way, maybe the catalyst to get more people to pay attention and start understanding what is really going on. Bad attention is still attention. I’m just afraid that too many people are going to see this as a reason to buy into government controlling more and more.  The only thing that may stop that is past track records. The Morons can’t even run a simple restaurant in the capitol without outrageous losses.
We could really use a George Washington right about now. Despite all the odds that man had against him he rallied the worn out and naysayers back together and pulled off the most extraordinary defeat that gave us the will to keep fighting.

Will! Is there anymore out there.

[I known it is not polite to answer a question with another. Sorry!]
