Retailer denies sign is a slur - “no gringo papers” necessar

A Casa Furniture and Bedding store in Alexandria has been advertising easy credit with a twist: “no gringo papers” necessary.
Asign outside the store at the intersection of North Beauregard and Kingstreets reads, “Credito sin papeles de gringo.” In English, that couldbe translated to say “Credit without gringo papers.”

The double standard is upsetting, but probably not surprising to anyone here.

I think that the important thing to note in your post is that this is Alexandria, VA - not Laredo, TX or Los Angeles, CA.

I lived in northern VA until last year, and the place is nearly a lost cause.  Not just because it is unquenchably "en fuego" liberal, but because of the massive influx of illegal immigrants.  MS-13 has made dramatic inroads in the area D.C. Metro area.  Also, Herndon, VA was becoming a sanctuary city, and taxpayer money was to be used to establish covered "stations" for day-laborers (to keep the poor illegals from getting wet in the rain).  Luckily, I think that plan was eventually thwarted & I haven't kept up to date on the situation.

The important point, I think, is that illegal immigration is not merely an issue for Border States.  The problem may be far worse on the Mexican Border, but the scourge of illegal immigration is truly Nationwide.  No region is untouched.

It is interesting but the term "gringo" is a slur and most often used in a derogatory sense when used against Anglos.  It is nearly the equivalent of the N-word.  But nobody cares about that because slurring caucasians is acceptable.

Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gringo) has a wonderfully biased piece on this term:

Some disagreement exists among English speakers regarding whether gringo is a derogatory term. The American Heritage Dictionary and other English dictionaries classify the term as "offensive slang", "usually disparaging" or "often disparaging".[4] The term gringo does lend itself to derogatory, paternalistic or endearing connotations sometimes, depending on the context and the intent of the user.[2][3] However, many native speakers who use it do not do so pejoratively,[2][3] as is also the case with some English speakers.[5][6] The enunciation of the word can often give away whether it was meant in a derogatory manner or not.[1][2][3] There is furthermore some variation in the connotation of this word from country to country within Latin America,[2] and between Latin America and the Anglosphere.

Who cares what Anglos think when they hear the term used in reference to themselves?  It is much more important what Latinos mean when they say it.  If I was called "Gringo" in Ecuador I knew I was in a bad place.  If I was called a "Gringito" or "little gringo" everything was good.

Can you imagine Wikipedia posting an article like that above substituting the N-word for Gringo?  Yeah, me neither.
