Rant - Warning: some Profanity

This new is tremendously encouraging; but it also infuriates me.  (I'll explain below. WARNING: there will be a bit of unrepentant profanity)

Here's the article:

Climate Panel on the Hot Seat
By H. Sterling Burnett
March 14, 2008

More than 20 years ago, climate scientists began to raise alarms over the possibility global temperatures were rising due to human activities, such as deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels.

To better understand this potential threat, the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations created the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 1988 to provide a "comprehensive, objective, scientific, technical and socioeconomic assessment of human-caused climate change, its potential impacts and options for adaptation and mitigation."

IPCC reports have predicted average world temperatures will increase dramatically, leading to the spread of tropical diseases, severe drought, the rapid melting of the world's glaciers and ice caps, and rising sea levels. However, several assessments of the IPCC's work have shown the techniques and methods used to derive its climate predictions are fundamentally flawed.

In a 2001 report, the IPCC published an image commonly referred to as the "hockey stick." This graph showed relatively stable temperatures from A.D. 1000 to 1900, with temperatures rising steeply from 1900 to 2000. The IPCC and public figures, such as former Vice President Al Gore, have used the hockey stick to support the conclusion that human energy use over the last 100 years has caused unprecedented rise global warming.

However, several studies cast doubt on the accuracy of the hockey stick, and in 2006 Congress requested an independent analysis of it. A panel of statisticians chaired by Edward J. Wegman, of George Mason University, found significant problems with the methods of statistical analysis used by the researchers and with the IPCC's peer review process. For example, the researchers who created the hockey stick used the wrong time scale to establish the mean temperature to compare with recorded temperatures of the last century. Because the mean temperature was low, the recent temperature rise seemed unusual and dramatic. This error was not discovered in part because statisticians were never consulted.

Furthermore, the community of specialists in ancient climates from which the peer reviewers were drawn was small and many of them had ties to the original authors — 43 paleoclimatologists had previously coauthored papers with the lead researcher who constructed the hockey stick.

These problems led Mr. Wegman's team to conclude that the idea that the planet is experiencing unprecedented global warming "cannot be supported."

The IPCC published its Fourth Assessment Report in 2007 predicting global warming will lead to widespread catastrophe if not mitigated, yet failed to provide the most basic requirement for effective climate policy: accurate temperature statistics. A number of weaknesses in the measurements include the fact temperatures aren't recorded from large areas of the Earth's surface and many weather stations once in undeveloped areas are now surrounded by buildings, parking lots and other heat-trapping structures resulting in an urban-heat-island effect. [emphasis mine]

Even using accurate temperature data, sound forecasting methods are required to predict climate change. Over time, forecasting researchers have compiled 140 principles that can be applied to a broad range of disciplines, including science, sociology, economics and politics.

In a recent NCPA study, Kesten Green and J. Scott Armstrong used these principles to audit the climate forecasts in the Fourth Assessment Report. Messrs. Green and Armstrong found the IPCC clearly violated 60 of the 127 principles relevant in assessing the IPCC predictions. Indeed, it could only be clearly established that the IPCC followed 17 of the more than 127 forecasting principles critical to making sound predictions.

A good example of a principle clearly violated is "Make sure forecasts are independent of politics." Politics shapes the IPCC from beginning to end. Legislators, policymakers and/or diplomatic appointees select (or approve) the scientists — at least the lead scientists — who make up the IPCC. In addition, the summary and the final draft of the IPCC's Fourth Assessment Report was written in collaboration with political appointees and subject to their approval.

Sadly, Mr. Green and Mr. Armstrong found no evidence the IPCC was even aware of the vast literature on scientific forecasting methods, much less applied the principles.

The IPCC and its defenders often argue that critics who are not climate scientists are unqualified to judge the validity of their work. However, climate predictions rely on methods, data and evidence from other fields of expertise, including statistical analysis and forecasting. Thus, the work of the IPCC is open to analysis and criticism from other disciplines.

The IPCC's policy recommendations are based on flawed statistical analyses and procedures that violate general forecasting principles. Policymakers should take this into account before enacting laws to counter global warming — which economists point out would have severe economic consequences.

Humor me, and allow me to vent my spleen.  No offense is meant to any members of this forum.

My first post on this forum was titled "There is NO credible evidence of warming temperatures".  It described the statistical unreliability of the temperature data used by IPCC to develop their "Average" "Global" Temperature for the last 140 years.  I argued that the data used by IPCC was based entirely on one study by one man - Phil Jones of The University of East Anglia in the UK.  I argued that this data was neither "Global" nor an "Average".  I described the problem with the data very clearly, concisely, and in easily understandable terms - requiring no expertise in climatology or statistics.  Most Importantly, I pointed out that this ONE SET OF DATA was THE UNEQUIVOCAL PRIMARY SOURCE for any and all claims of Global Warming.  Therefore, if this data were flawed (as I argued it was) that the ENTIRE THEORY OF GLOBAL WARMING WAS UTTERLY DIS-PROVEN.  NO further arguments against global warming are necessary, or even useful.

Aside from having to wrangle with the (now-defunct) Leftist moron "Pangaea"; I know that many of you sort of agreed with me -- BUT, I have never seemed to be able to get anyone to grasp that THIS one set of data is THE KEY.  THIS totally disproves Global Warming.  No other discussion is necessary.  Still, there was other discussion.

This is not to disparage folks on this board.  I've been frustrated with the unquestioning acceptance that there has indeed been 0.6 degrees C warming since 1860, when I KNEW, and could undisputably PROVE that this was not the case.  I have e-mailed, and tried to call Rush Limbaugh innumerable times with the truth about the IPCC's "Global Average Temperature" data.  I have e-mailed, and tried to called into other conservative radio hosts, and been ignored each time.  I have e-mailed this information to Roy Spencer, the scientist at the University of Alabama Huntsville that Rush considers the smartest guy in the world on Global Warming.  I was ignored. I've corresponded with Timothy Ball, a prominent Global Warming "denier" from Canada, and head of the Natural Resources Stewardship Project.  He seemed to understand what I was saying, but failed to grasp it's importance.  I have contacted Michael Mann, a professor at UVA and the "climatologist" behind the now-discredited "Hockey-Stick" graph, and colleague of Phil Jones - the author/compiler of the bogus data UPON WHICH ALL OF GLOBAL WARMING THEORY DEPENDS.  I asked him to send me the raw thermometer readings used to compile the P. Jones bogus "Global Average" temperature data.  He asked who I was & why I wanted it -- I told him that I was a student trying to recreate the data presented in Jones' Papers.  He told me that he would send it to me -- he didn't; and all further attempts at contact have been unsuccessful.   I have tried repeatedly to contact "Professor" Phil Jones in the UK, but have never gotten any response.  To double -check my argument, I have contacted statistics professors at three Schools I have attended to ask  them to assess the "Global Average" Temperature data - to make sure that my conclusions were correct.  I was given one promise, two excuses, and two professors actually flat out refused to assess the data -- not because they were busy, but because they REFUSED to question Global Warming data.  I e-mailed the data and my arguments to two professors that I had at Boston University in Grad School, one didn't respond, and the other came up with a barely coherent argument as to why I was wrong.   I've sent my arguments to Congressmen and Senators, Professors, Government Employees, Non-Profit Organizations and Conservative think tanks like Heritage Foundation and the American Enterprise Institute.  Mostly, though, I have tried to persuade anyone I could with this argument on conservative websites, blogs, and forums here on teh interweb-thingy.

All ignored, or not understood.

I say that there has been unquestioning acceptance of the temperature data because this lie has been repeated by people who supposedly understand, yet do not believe, the Theory of Global Warming.  Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck and EVERY SINGLE CONSERVATIVE TALK SHOW HOST has REPEATEDLY accepted this LIE, while claiming to understand Global Warming.  Everyone in the Media who has been highlighted as Global Warming "Deniers" has ACCEPTED AND PROPAGATED this LIE, repeatedly and routinely.  Scientists who claim to know their way around the Global Warming debate, and are nevertheless "Deniers" get on radio, television, and in print -- to UNQUESTIONINGLY ACCEPT AND PROPAGATE this LIE.  Arguing relevant, yet unimportant, problems with other aspects of the Global Warming "evidence" while UTTERLY AND IGNORANTLY DISREGARDING THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF DATA.  Blindly acknowledging, accepting, and propagating this LIE. It is the KEYSTONE to the Global Warming Theory.  It is the ONE PIECE without which there can be no whole.  Yet it has been, ignored, misunderstood, or blindly and unquestioningly accepted by EVERYONE.

........Until Now.

So, am I happy that this Panel of Statisticians was organized by Congress? Yes.
Am I excited to hear the conclusions of Professor Wegman? Yes
Am I glad that something I have known for years has finally been discovered by someone else? Yes
Am I glad that this LIE may finally see the light of day? Yes
Do I feel vindicated? That remains to be seen.

Am I pissed off? YOU BET
Why?

WHY THE frig HAS NO ONE EVER LISTENED TO ME?

Call me a whining baby.  Say I just want attention.  Say I'm insecure and desperate for acceptance and reassurance. Say I'm trying to claim some kind of credit (impossible and absurd).  Say I'm crying because people pay attention to what others say but not to what I say.  Say I'm falsely trying to get people to think that I'm soooo smart.  Say I'm a petulant child.  I don't care.

All of those things may or may not be true.  I can't help being frustrated as hell.  Truthfully, I would never expect people at large to give credence to what I say, just because I say it. I'm not going to sway opinion on any grand scale.  I'm not a climatologist, I'm not a statistician, I don't have a PhD, I'm not a professor, I'm not anybody that anyone should believe just because I say something.

But I DO expect people to believe things that I say because they are LOGICAL, RATIONAL, FACTUAL, INDEPENDENTLY VERIFIABLE and TRUE.

Well, dood, I watched that other guy's videos and that pretty well proved it.  The evidence is in.  The hockey stick is back and we are gonna get buried in all this Global Warming "white powder!"

Hey, Eyas, dood, have you seen my sweater man?  I need to take the chill off all this Global Warming stuff.
