Hair is nice but a good beard is the real mark of a manly man!  I mean, look at John Edwards.  He has $10,000 hair but he couldn't win a single state.
He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire.

How did you know I have a beard?

There have been several posts about how America has survived worse things than a single bad president

This is absolutely true.  However, I don't see the demise of the United States attributable to a Clinton, Obama, or McCain presidency.  To me, it's far more widespread & insidious than any single candidate.  As I've said before, this nation has one enemy with two heads: 1) the Leftist MSM; and, 2) the Leftist control of Academia at all levels.

McCain's recent success is not the problem - it is a symptom of the real problem.  So-called "independents" (i.e. people to ignorant to form a solid, principled opinion) love McCain because the media loves McCain and they are still held captive by the biased reporting of the MSM.  Even some people who call themselves "conservatives" - or at least "Republicans" laccept McCain for the very same reason -- they believe what they are told by the MSM.   Leftists love McCain OR Clinton because they either: A) have been indocrinated in leftist schooling all their lives; or, B) they are aging Hippies trying to prove (despite all intervening evidence) that their hippie ideology was actually valid.

I don't worry about this nation's future because of a single election or presidency.  I worry because the circumstances which may lead to a McCain - Clinton Presidential race show no signs of being offset, limited, eliminated, or otherwise impacted by the conservative movement in America - nor even by rational thought and dissemination of truth.  If Leftists continue to control what is accepted as truth -- if they continue to control public sentiment -- we are doomed, regardless of the outcome of this particular election.

I see McCain's success as an indicator that conservative thought is not prevalent even among the half of the population which votes Republican.  In other words, it tells me that Leftist thought is winning among the vast majority of Americans.

[SIZE=9pt]You have assigned chief responsibility to the attack on America to academia and the media several times.  That is interesting because I see them as tools of other powerful forces.  I know it sounds like “conspiracy” but there is a coordinated and growing left-wing alliance that is actively seeking to impose their beliefs on the institutions of the nation.  They have clearly succeeded in academia and the media.  They own the democrat party.  I read the book “Vast Left Wing Conspiracy” and it really was telling.

I agree with your assessment of McCain.  He is more a symptom than the cause.  We have turned generations of young student’s brains into MUSH.  They were trying to do it back in the 70s when I was in high school but it wasn’t as well organized as it is now.  I was always a conservative and it drove many of my teachers crazy.

I don’t know if liberalism has taken over half of the GOP or they simply no longer understand what conservatism really means.  Of course, it is not necessary to do more than confuse a large part of the opposition into inaction.

But, these moronic reporters and equally moronic professors at liberal media outfits and colleges don’t have the ability to organize a plot of this scope and size.

Oh, I couldn't agree with you more.  I am aware of the "conspiracy" or cabal that you describe.  And, just in case it hasn't been posted elsewhere on this forum, I post the "Goals of Communism" within America below.
I claim that the media and academia are the "enemy" because I can't identify who might be "behind" them.  There's no doubt that most people in the media, and most teachers/professors are simply misguided "tools" of the Anti-American, Pro-Communist Cabal within this country.  But, if I can't identify the "Generals"; I can certainly identify the "Army" whose mission is the "slanting" of American public sentiment, and whose guns are confused ideologies, and whose bullets are words.
I know that there are people/organizations/"forces" masterminding the dissemination of propoganda from the media and academia - but it's difficult to pin down the individuals involved in this cabal.  I see their penultimate goal as making communism, totalitarianism, and global governance palatable to the American populace.  This has required a decades-long, persistent, and patient agenda -- and I think that it is coming to fruition now... TODAY.  It's possible that this communist cabal, which surely includes Hillary Clinton, may have made a mistake, and revealed themselves too soon; but given the positive (or, at least, accepting) response among Americans, they have already achieved enough of a disillusionment/stranglehold on the American public that they (e.g., Hillary) are not afraid to reveal their true communist faces.  I mean, could you imagine some of the recent statements of Hillary (nearly quoting Marx or Lenin) getting a pass in the 1950's, 1960's, 1970's, or even the 1980's.
Anyway, whoever makes up the power-brokers of this cabal, and whatever their goal is -- the agenda is carried out day to day by the media and academia.  This is the propoganda Army of the leftist "conspiracy".  As in any war, the mere identification or assassination of a leader or general is unlikely to guarantee success.  The Army must be fought and defeated.  That's why I identify the media and academia as the enemy; they are the Army of propogandists who fight the enemy's war for the soul of America.
The cabal/ conspiracy may have started small. And, it may currently be governed/guided by a small group of individuals.  But, by now, the conspiracy has spread through America to the point that the entire "Army" is no longer just a set of tools, but also an unending source of future leaders to carry on with the mission/agenda.
Here are the Goals of Communism in America from "The Naked Communist," by Cleon Skousen, and presented to The House of Representatives back in 1963 by Congressman Herlong:
If some folks here haven't seen this before, remember to check-off each of the goals already accomplished as you go through the list.

CURRENT COMMUNIST GOALS
Congressional Record--Appendix, pp. A34-A35
January 10, 1963
REMARKS OF HON. A. S. HERLONG, JR. OF FLORIDA
IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
Mr. HERLONG. Mr. Speaker, Mrs. Patricia Nordman of De Land, Fla., is an ardent and articulate opponent of communism, and until recently published the De Land Courier, which she dedicated to the purpose of alerting the public to the dangers of communism in America.
At Mrs. Nordman's request, I include in the RECORD, under unanimous consent, the following "Current Communist Goals," which she identifies as an excerpt from "The Naked Communist," by Cleon Skousen:
1. U.S. acceptance of coexistence as the only alternative to atomic war.
2. U.S. willingness to capitulate in preference to engaging in atomic war.
3. Develop the illusion that total disarmament [by] the United States would be a demonstration of moral strength.
4. Permit free trade between all nations regardless of Communist affiliation and regardless of whether or not items could be used for war.
5. Extension of long-term loans to Russia and Soviet satellites.
6. Provide American aid to all nations regardless of Communist domination.
7. Grant recognition of Red China. Admission of Red China to the U.N.
8. Set up East and West Germany as separate states in spite of Khrushchev's promise in 1955 to settle the German question by free elections under supervision of the U.N.
9. Prolong the conferences to ban atomic tests because the United States has agreed to suspend tests as long as negotiations are in progress.
10. Allow all Soviet satellites individual representation in the U.N.
11. Promote the U.N. as the only hope for mankind. If its charter is rewritten, demand that it be set up as a one-world government with its own independent armed forces. (Some Communist leaders believe the world can be taken over as easily by the U.N. as by Moscow. Sometimes these two centers compete with each other as they are now doing in the Congo.)
12. Resist any attempt to outlaw the Communist Party.
13. Do away with all loyalty oaths.
14. Continue giving Russia access to the U.S. Patent Office.
15. Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States.
16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.
17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers' associations. Put the party line in textbooks.
18. Gain control of all student newspapers.
19. Use student riots to foment public protests against programs or organizations which are under Communist attack.
20. Infiltrate the press. Get control of book-review assignments, editorial writing, policymaking positions.
21. Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion pictures.
22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to "eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms."
23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. "Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art."
24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press.
25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.
26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy."
27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with "social" religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity which does not need a "religious crutch."
28. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of "separation of church and state."
29. Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis.
30. Discredit the American Founding Fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the "common man."
31. Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of American history on the ground that it was only a minor part of the "big picture." Give more emphasis to Russian history since the Communists took over.
32. Support any socialist movement to give centralized control over any part of the culture--education, social agencies, welfare programs, mental health clinics, etc.
33. Eliminate all laws or procedures which interfere with the operation of the Communist apparatus.
34. Eliminate the House Committee on Un-American Activities.
35. Discredit and eventually dismantle the FBI.
36. Infiltrate and gain control of more unions.
37. Infiltrate and gain control of big business.
38. Transfer some of the powers of arrest from the police to social agencies. Treat all behavioral problems as psychiatric disorders which no one but psychiatrists can understand [or treat].
39. Dominate the psychiatric profession and use mental health laws as a means of gaining coercive control over those who oppose Communist goals.
40. Discredit the family as an institution. Encourage promiscuity and easy divorce.
41. Emphasize the need to raise children away from the negative influence of parents. Attribute prejudices, mental blocks and retarding of children to suppressive influence of parents.
42. Create the impression that violence and insurrection are legitimate aspects of the American tradition; that students and special-interest groups should rise up and use ["]united force["] to solve economic, political or social problems.
43. Overthrow all colonial governments before native populations are ready for self-government.
44. Internationalize the Panama Canal.
45. Repeal the Connally reservation so the United States cannot prevent the World Court from seizing jurisdiction [over domestic problems. Give the World Court jurisdiction] over nations and individuals alike.

Liberalism HAS taken over.  They still know what conservatism is, but they feel as if it represents a naive attitude that they had before they were "enlightened" by their colleagues and neighbors in Washington, D.C..  You're in No. VA, you know the Leftist miasma that pervades every aspect of life in D.C.. Most GOP Senators & Congressmen have simply been there too long.  They have quite literally been INFECTED by liberalism as if it were a virus. (The entire God-forsaken place should be quarantined.)

As far as reporters go, you're certainly right.  But whoever the original members of the Communist conspiracy/cabal were, they most certainly included University professors, and include some University professors today.  The average liberal teacher is probably just an unwitting (witless) tool; but certain "influential" academics have always been at the heart of this thing.

Oh, and lets not forget the Fifth Column/Shadow Government that exists within Federal departments and agencies.  Leftists sit in unelected control of the entire Administrative State of the Federal Government.  Everything from the EPA to the CIA, and especially the State Department (whose goal appears to be the destruction of this Nation-State).

This is an enemy that I should include in my list of the media & academia.  The enemy is a THREE-headed hydra, not Two-headed.

(My opinions are always subject to change & I think this is an important change to make)

Okay, this makes sense in a crazy, conspiratorial way.  We know that there are people behind the “vast left wing conspiracy” but we may not be able to clearly identify all of them.  But we certainly know who is doing their heavy lifting.

Yes, liberalism certainly acts like a virus.  It turns the conservative areas of the brain to mush, soft of like a lot of funny mushrooms.  Fortunately, I have moved in and out of the area more than once and spent several years in the Former Soviet Union which successfully inoculated me against the disease.  Maybe we should make MORE elected officials live in the FSU.

Lovely stuff,
From The UK Times:

Religious Police in Saudi Arabia Arrest Mother for Sitting with a Man

Sonia Verma in Dubai
February 7, 2008

A 37-year-old American businesswoman and married mother of three is seeking justice after she was thrown in jail by Saudi Arabia's religious police for sitting with a male colleague at a Starbucks coffee shop in Riyadh.
Yara, who does not want her last name published for fear of retribution, was bruised and crying when she was freed from a day in prison after she was strip-searched, threatened and forced to sign false confessions by the Kingdom's “Mutaween” police.
Her story offers a rare first-hand glimpse of the discrimination faced by women living in Saudi Arabia. In her first interview with the foreign press, Yara told The Times that she would remain in Saudi Arabia to challenge its harsh enforcement of conservative Islam rather than return to America.
“If I want to make a difference I have to stick around. If I leave they win. I can't just surrender to the terrorist acts of these people,” said Yara, who moved to Jeddah eight years ago with her husband, a prominent businessman.
Her ordeal began with a routine visit to the new Riyadh offices of her finance company, where she is a managing partner.
The electricity temporarily cut out, so Yara and her colleagues — who are all men — went to a nearby Starbucks to use its wireless internet.
She sat in a curtained booth with her business partner in the café's “family” area, the only seats where men and women are allowed to mix.
For Yara, it was a matter of convenience. But in Saudi Arabia, public contact between unrelated men and women is strictly prohibited.
“Some men came up to us with very long beards and white dresses. They asked ‘Why are you here together?'. I explained about the power being out in our office. They got very angry and told me what I was doing was a great sin,” recalled Yara, who wears an abaya and headscarf, like most Saudi women.
The men were from Saudi Arabia's Commission for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, a police force of several thousand men charged with enforcing dress codes, sex segregation and the observance of prayers.
Yara, whose parents are Jordanian and grew up in Salt Lake City, once believed that life in Saudi Arabia was becoming more liberal. But on Monday the religious police took her mobile phone, pushed her into a cab and drove her to Malaz prison in Riyadh. She was interrogated, strip-searched and forced to sign and fingerprint a series of confessions pleading guilty to her “crime”.
“They took me into a filthy bathroom, full of water and dirt. They made me take off my clothes and squat and they threw my clothes in this slush and made me put them back on,” she said. Eventually she was taken before a judge.
“He said 'You are sinful and you are going to burn in hell'. I told him I was sorry. I was very submissive. I had given up. I felt hopeless,” she said.
Yara's husband, Hatim, used his political contacts in Jeddah to track her whereabouts. He was able to secure her release.
“I was lucky. I met other women in that prison who don't have the connections I did,” she said. Her story has received rare coverage in Saudi Arabia, where the press has been sharply critical of the police.
Yara was visited yesterday by officials from the American Embassy, who promised they would file a report.
An embassy official told The Times that it was being treated as “an internal Saudi matter” and refused to comment on her case.

Tough justice:

— Saudi Arabia’s Mutaween has 10,000 members in almost 500 offices

— Ahmad al-Bluwi, 50, died in custody in 2007 in the city of Tabuk after he invited a woman outside his immediate family into his car

— In 2007 the victim of a gang rape was sentenced to 200 lashes and six years in jail for having been in an unrelated man’s car at the time. She was pardoned by King Abdullah, although he maintained the sentence had been fair

I mean, seriously!  Can you believe the evil, vile tramp!  Sitting with another man in a coffee shop!  My, oh, my, how public morals have withered.  I hope they stoned or whipped her and every other woman in the Saudi Kingdom for this brazen act of immorality.

I imagine the New York NAGs must be livid and will deploy their emergency response teams to the every Starbucks in Saudi Arabia any time now.

Oh, and remember, Christianity devalues and enslaves women!
