...so what? in small town america the people still rule. we govern with a very tight fist. the mayor is a tool that has to pick up the mess we make for ourselves. its nothing like national politics and assimilating national with local as an indicator of morality is inaccurate and inappropriate.
i'll give you an example from this little corner of the world. in our town we pay the very highest taxes in the state. virtually the entire budget goes to education. and we have one of the largest, newest facilities housing the fewest students per square foot. we have the highest paid teachers in the state, possibly country. and we have a lot of them. all supposed hot-shots. we also have multiple sports complexes, some with 1-aa rated astro-turf. our high school complex puts most private colleges to shame.
yet out-of-pocket we pay for our kid's participation in sports. programs. crayons. markers. paper. food. trips. on and on. and we're not talking about small amounts of money. serious jack. i don't know what the average family pays per kid but at this house its over $1,000 and without this the kids simply do not get to participate in anything other than class, and even there it would be without the tools needed to learn.
hoover would envy the sucking sound our schools make, not just monetarily but performance wise too. generally the children of this town show mediocre academic performance compared with their grouping. and the teams cannot win a game to save their lives much less their own reputation. the only successes i attribute to our kids are the one's we, my wife and i, give them. the school is a complete sham as far as we are concerned.
and the only people that don't see this is that soccer-mom-mafia that collect like a flock of rabid cats, have and make the time to attend and vote at every public hearing, make certain its an open vote, explode at even the slightest observations on that budget, get another increase passed, and then celebrate by tossing back another prosac with a vodka chaser spinning off in the dark in their suv or van, and ready to the quick to argue about how green we are in la la land.
this town, one of the wealthiest, can't scrape together two quarters to fix a road. or drainage system. or pay the police. or anything else for that matter. you cannot image the amount of volunteerism and donations that keep this place going.
if this town were to distribute rape kits, our mayor would be forced to stick them in vending machines. personally i know the man well, and he'd love nothing more than to give them away. and every day that poor man shakes his head in complete dismay at the behavior of the parents in this town. its just sickening.
business is business. notions of morality are great if you can afford them. but don't blame a mayor for financial woes inflicted on a town by its own people. go look in a mirror.
