At least not if intelligent, free men and women hold Government to a strong standard of scrutiny. As a free people, we must hold our legislators accountable for their actions and never simply "fall in line," especially if there are guns involved.
Of course, you could always just march in step to the Patriot act singing Toby Keith at the top of your lungs - and then if someone takes your bible away (still a laughable concept) you'll deserve it.
Yes, I think naive is the operative word.
Think of the long list of unconstitutional government actions starting with the "Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798." Wait, you think history started yesterday so this may come as a rude shock for you.
Frankly, our ability "to hold our legislators accountable for their actions" is practically zero. I have bombarded my representatives with letters, faxes and calls over the years and have been routinely ignored by them. Warner, Webb and Davis will not be influenced by their constituents. They simply "know better" than peons like me.
I find it humerous that you think I'm arguing that the government doesn't partake in unconstitutional actions. I wholeheartedly agree. And I applaud your efforts with letters and such. But see, theres this feeling among people that if you stand up against your government, you'll be called a communist; a traitor; a non-patriot who hates our troops... I wonder where people get that idea from???
See, my point was that your overriding fear that Colorado is going to ban the Bible, is pretty irrational. It really doesn't serve the government to take away your Bible. So many people love their precious Bible's so much that it would only serve to destroy all of that illegitimate power the government has ammassed.
And I remain to be the naive one. You personally know 4 or 5 justices want to steal your bible? Yep, Kennedy is going to yank it right out from under you. Wait a second... if you knew anything about Kennedy's actual voting record you'd know he's been very consistent in upholding First Amendment rights (Ashcroft v. Free Speech Coalition, Legal Services Corp. v. Velazquez, US. v United Foods, US v. Playboy, Ashcroft v ACLU, even his dissenting vote in McConnell v FEC! to name a few). You cannot offer any precedent to say that any other justice, even Ginsburg, would want to take away your Bible. And considering the Colorado law doesn't even loosely provide for the banning of bibles... I think that's one civil liberty you can rest easy with. Though, don't be so sure about your 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, or 14th Amendment rights. The Patriot Act, NSA spying, the War on Terr'rr, (Conservatives in the house, lemme hear you say yeeeeea-aaaa!) and an attempt to regulate marriage based on a religious definition (I feel the shitfest coming) are all taking care of those for you.
And, boy you sure are good at rockin those unfounded ad hominems. Now, in addition to being a naive communist, I think history started yesterday. Tell me more about me! Do I love punching kittens? Am I a chronic masterbator?
Listen up Professor Lonely, keep the comments to the content. I know it makes you feel big and strong but it makes you look like an ignorant nutjob.
