The truth is in the north (where I live) and many areas in the west, saying you are republican or conservative is a dirty word. I mean that in the most serious way possible. It's typical for conservatives to say they don't really follow politics, or I don't like either candidate. It's a way of not being democrat, but not outing oneself as a conservative.
I disagree with this behavior - but it does exist.
Anyone who is truly undecided between a full on socialist with no experience, and a left leaning republican with war time experience is not interested in politics, or the future of their country. These people aren't going to vote unless someone brings them cigarettes, and a ride to the polling place.
here in yankee-ville, where i have been displaced for some time now, calling yourself a conservative or republican for that matter loosely translates into wearing your blue collar proudly. pretty-much all blue collars in this area are republicans, or at least they vote that way. even if they're union although we still have thugs that go poll hoping. show up in vans...funny how those particular vans seem to always get a flat.
but saying you're a democrat, well, that'll get you invited to the finest key, crack and coke parties in town. there are democrats here too, but they don't say that. not publically anyway and it seems like more and more are voting independent.
