Mayor of LA seems a little confused....

The mayor of LA, Antonio Villaraigosa, seems a bit confused about immigration law enforcement.

The mayor has "accused federal officials of targeting 'established, responsible employers' in industries that rely on "workforces that include undocumented immigrants."

Does anybody see a problem with that statement?  Well, first "responsible employers" don't violate federal employment laws.  I don't know about you but I have an Anglo last name and I MUST produce an I-9 with ID by the first week of a new job or I lose my job!  It is AGAINST THE LAW to hire someone who cannot produce acceptable ID.  If established employers, with big HR departments, are violating the laws THEY ARE NOT "RESPONSIBLE!"

Then the mayor said "said ICE should spend its limited resources targeting employers who exploit wage and hour laws."  In other words, the mayor things ICE should be protecting illegal immigrants from "exploitive, evil capitalists."  Um, even if that were a legitimate federal function it would probably be the responsibility of the Department of Labor and NOT ICE!  DOL enforces labor laws, ICE inforces immigration laws.  Hello, mayor!  Anybody  home?  What were you doing in your college classes on US Government?

Now, I find the next quote from the article fascinating and utterly depressing.  "ICE made more than 4,900 work-site arrests nationwide in fiscal 2007, a 45-fold increase over the number in 2001, authorities said."  Do the math.  4900/45 = 108.88.  That means in 2001 the feds arrested only 109 people at work-sites nationwide!  If there are 12 million illegals in the country it will take the feds 2448.97 years to round them all up at the present rate.  Looks like we made need to learn Spanish after all.  Aye Caramba!
