I like Rush but I think his humor degrades women

Postby southerngirl on 10/23/07, 8:38 pm

Hey everybody!  I am a very conservative young female from Alabama.  I have been a long time listener but I think Rush says things sometimes that are offensive to females.  Remember a couple of years ago when there was that big ordeal with those silly "Vagina Monologues"?   For those who aren't familiar, it was this silly play that moved around to different college campuses in which females go up on stage and talk about how wonderful their vaginas are.  It obviously had a feminist undertone.   As this play became more popular, they started passing out chocolates at various campuses that were shaped like that part of a woman's body (they looked a lot like the real thing and to me were very pornographic).

As prude and unoffensive as Rush tries to be on his show, he showed all the liberty in the world when this particular story was big.  I remember for a week this was all he would talk about.  Every 10th word for him was "vagina".   He even made off-color jokes about the chocolate candies tasting sweeter and not as bitter as the real thing (ha ha funny).  He even showed pictures of the candies on his website.

It seems like he doesn't use this same liberty when it is male sexual organs that are being made fun of.  He fusses at callers all the time who call in making jokes in reference to such.  And today when he posted that picture of that humorous award he got, he blurred out the part that showed brass male genitalia.   This is all fine by me, as I am a pretty prude person, but he should be doing the same when it is female anatomy that is the bunt of jokes.

Is he a hypocrite or a pervert?   Either way, I don't find it very humorous.

Hi there southerngirl!

I take Rush's humor as tongue in cheek.  If you try to take his humor literally, you end up in the liberal trap.  He illustrates the absurd by being absurd, and that's why it's so easy for the media to use his words against him, out of their original context.

I don't think Rush is sexist at all.  He just likes to illustrate some of the funnier ideas of the feminazis.

Thanks for your response.  I really appreciate it.  However, this isn't just a matter of humor;  this is a matter of decency standards.  Why did he think it was okay to show pictures of candies that look exactly like vaginas on his website?  He wouldn't do the same with penis-shaped candy.

I think I get your point but this still doesn't explain why today he blurred out the brass male genitalia on that award he got but didn't do it with the candies before.

Welcome aboard! Alabama is a beautiful state.

I do think there is a big difference here. The photo was given to him in a private dinner party by some friends, and he wanted to share the joke with his fans because it meant so much to him, but he knew it was risque.

The Vagina Monologues was a public performance with chocolate models handed out. Rush wanted to highlight a double standard: if they can broadcast that in public, men are allowed to poke fun at it on the radio. Don't get mad at Rush for repeating it - get mad at those dopey women for handing out chocolate.

I listen to Rush all the time and I don't think I've ever heard him defame women or talk down to women.

Okay, I see what you guys are trying to say now.  But it is not as if his female audience was pushing for what those silly feminist women were doing.  I think he could have watered it down a bit for the sake of his audience.  I thought he went a little too far.  If hardly any women listened to him I guess I could kind of understand it.

When Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly were talking about it, they didn't see it as a funny issue and they were speaking about it as if it was immoral.  Rush was acting as if he thought the whole thing was hilarious and he himself even made up some of his own degrading humor.  If his audience were all men I would understand this behavior a little better.

In regards to the chocolates already being public, it is not as if they were constantly showing them on the news. I think you had to actually be on these campuses the day they were getting handed out in order to see them.  As I said, the candies were very pornographic and very detailed and I don't think it was appropriate for the sake of decency for him to put those pictures on his web cam.  There was no purpose for it at all.  I am glad he found it humorous.

I dunno, maybe he just thought it was really funny.

I understand where you're coming from and I see how you could think it bad taste to do that. I'm not necessarily applauding it or saying I laughed at it. But like the others said, Rush meant it to have a good time and I doubt he actually meant to insult women.

This is one of the issues women have to weight carefully re: feminism. There's a fine line between celebrating female bodies vs simply celebrating sex, and that's a big gray area for a lot of men. In one sense, I do feel bad for men that the media constantly refers to their body parts in casual language. Brave men are known to have really big "items" and even race plays a part in sexual stereotypes. If women want equal treatment, we should be ready for equal jokes.

Again, this is NOT to say I thought Rush was funny with that and NOT to say you're stupid for bringing it up. I agree it was tacky. Just wanted to offer up some defense.

candace,  I enjoy your responses and I think you offer really good insight.  I certainly agree that it is mostly feminists pushing for this constant propaganda about female sex organs being equal to male sex organs and that they should therefore be talked about as much.  I find the whole thing goofy and silly.   I would rather my sex organs NOT be talked about, thank you feminists and I certainly don't see them "equal" (however you take that to mean) to male sex organs.

Before feminists, men always had their strip clubs and pornorgraphic magazines but they kept that stuff private and they were pretty polite about keeping it away from mainstream society and they didn't talk about it around women.   It seems that it was only feminists who pushed for this silly mainstreaming of female sex organs and this constantly refering to them in TV shows and movies.   To me it just seems a lot goofier than constantly refering to male organs (although I see both as equally inappropriate).

What these feminists are doing is actually degrading women.  I can't believe they think they are making women more secure about themselves.

However, I guess I can't let this whole thing with Rush go because in the back of my head I know that if it was the same situation but the gender in question was reversed, he wouldn't find it as humorous; he would find it offensive.  Oh well, such is life.
