I hold it, that rebellion, every now and then, is beneficial, and are as necessary in the political world as storms are in the physical.

"Can there not be a government in which the majorities

do not virtually decide right and wrong,

but conscience?

— in which majorities decide only those questions

to which the rule of expediency is applicable?

Must the citizen ever for a moment, or in the least degree,

resign his conscience to the legislator?

Why has every man a conscience then?

I think that we should be men first,

and subjects afterward.

It is not desirable to cultivate a respect for the law,

so much as for the right.

The only obligation which I have a right to assume

is to do at any time what I think right."

I think it was Henry David Thoreau who said it first. Now some moronic lib may have quoted him and claimed it as his own. Biden used to be good at that game.
He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire.
"The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of the blessings. The inherent blessing of socialism is the equal sharing of misery."

After all, the practical reason why,

when the power is once in the hands of the people,

a majority are permitted, and for a long period continue,

to rule is not because they are most likely to be in the right,

nor because this seems fairest to the minority,

but because they are physically the strongest.

But a government in which the majority rule in all cases

can not be based on justice,

even as far as men understand it.

Can there not be a government in which the majorities

do not virtually decide right and wrong,

but conscience?

— in which majorities decide only those questions

to which the rule of expediency is applicable?

Must the citizen ever for a moment, or in the least degree,

resign his conscience to the legislator?

Why has every man a conscience then?

I think that we should be men first,

and subjects afterward.

It is not desirable to cultivate a respect for the law,

so much as for the right.

The only obligation which I have a right to assume

is to do at any time what I think right.  - Henry David Thoreau  1849

Let's try something new for a change.  Who said this and when?

"The fundamental basis of this nation's laws was given to Moses on
the Mount.

The fundamental basis of our Bill of Rights comes from the teachings
we get from Exodus and St. Matthew, from Isaiah and St. Paul.

I don't think we emphasize that enough these days."

The speaker then concluded:

"If we don't have a proper fundamental moral background, we will
finally end up with a totalitarian government which does not believe
in rights for anybody except for the State."
He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire.
"The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of the blessings. The inherent blessing of socialism is the equal sharing of misery."

I still know some, a few. They are just out numbered about 100 to 1.

It is a bit amusing that some of you have attempted to show foolish quotes by liberals. Yet you are merely providing us with quotes from ancient history. In the meantime the buffoon that runs this country is spouting them out left and right. "Make no mistake about it, I understand how tough it is, sir. I talk to families who die." --George W. Bush, Washington, D.C., Dec. 7, 2006

"The only way we can win is to leave before the job is done." --George W. Bush, Greeley, Colo., Nov. 4, 2006

"You know, one of the hardest parts of my job is to connect Iraq to the war on terror." --George W. Bush, interview with CBS News' Katie Couric, Sept. 6, 2006
