I think you mean Rachel Carson, who wrote "Silent Spring".
It's a good point though; the outright ban on DDT, inspired by "Silent Spring" was the first, but certainly not the last example of Environmental Exaggeration.
Environmentalists are those who believe that "the environment" must be "protected" REGARDLESS OF COST.
By far, the worst example of this is the Endangered Species Act (ESA) which specifies that "economic considerations are irrelevant", and was based on the premise that the value of even one species is "incalculable" - i.e. infinite.
As a result, one of the first major cases required the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to totally scrap a Hydroelectric Plant/Dam that would benefit Tennesseans by providing "power generation, flood control, recreation, and regional development."
Why? The snail darter. An inch-long sub-species of fish.
Luckily, Congress later exempted the dam from the ESA. There power plant was never built but the "land that was taken by eminent domain for under $500.00 per acre is now Tellico Village and Rarity Bay with lots selling for upwards of half a million dollars."
Oh, and "populations of the snail darter were later located in other streams."
Another ridiculous recent example was the Radon in Drinking Water Rule.
Firstly, it's quite expensive for Water Companies to install the necessary equipment to remove Radon from your tap water.
Radon is a radioactive gas that occurs naturally, and is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the country - it's nasty stuff that usually accumulates in people's basements as it seeps from the ground. Radon is also present in the air outside as source of background radiation. There's also some Radon in drinking water drawn from wells.
A good thing to regulate, yes? ..... Well, actually, no.
You see Radon is measured in Picocuries per liter (pCi/L). Some people have had radon concentrations in their basements of 8 Million pCi/L. The constant, background exposure that every living thing has constantly been exposed to since the beginning of Life is about 3,000 pCi/L. That is, every day of your life, you walk out your front door and are constantly exposed (all day, every day) to background radioactivity from Radon of 3,000 pCi/L. This is independent from all other sources of background radiation that you and every living thing experiences every day of their lives -- 3,000.
So (at great expense to all consumers of tap water from ground water) what was the limit that EPA set for Radon in tap water.........................
