China Persecutes Tibet

China Persecutes Tibet

Postby paleocon on 03/22/08, 1:58 pm

I have wondered why the US has taken such a low profile in the current round of Chinese oppression in Tibet.  No administration official has made a statement as far as I am aware of.  Of course, there is precious little we could do but at least we should point out the government oppression and violence against the Tibetan people.

Then I saw Nancy Pelosiof all people stand up and condemn China for this assualt on liberty.  It really makes me nervous when Nancy and I agree on anything.  But, where are all the conservative pundits on this issue?

I think most conservatives are hoping that the 'reform" Red China's making economically will translate into political reform there and they don't want to stir a pot like that in an election year.

Well, that assumes the current US government has any actual conservatives in it.  It is pretty darn clear that the White House has no principled conservatives inside that structure.  Congress has a few though their ranks are dwindling.

I personally doubt that the so-called economic boom in China will do much for democracy there.  The Chinese government pays lip-service to Mao and communism but are clearly just a bunch of totalitarian thugs.

If the FSU is any indicator, economic liberalization will not usher in western-style democracy.

What evidence can anyone present to demonstrate that economic growth in China will bring political liberalization?
